The 3 Principles of Buying a Wedding Veil

contributed by Kathleen Mary

With wedding veils now becoming more elaborate and made in bold new colors, it is harder to determine which one will look best with your wedding gown. The bridal veil is only a wedding accessory. It should not be the main focal point of your bridal ensemble. Keep these principles in mind when shopping for a wedding veil:

1. Less is more. If there is heavy embroidery all over the back of the veil, it will cover the back of the gown. If the gown has a corset back or an elaborate train, you want to select a wedding veil that has little or no embellishment. The beautiful details at the back of your gown will easily be seen through the plain, pencil or satin cord edge veil.

2. Plain veils look good with any tiara or bridal jewelry. Wearing a plain veil allows the bride to wear a more stunning tiara and choose bolder jewelry such as chandelier earrings. If you select an embroidered designer veil, then you have to choose a simpler tiara. A large rhinestone tiara and busy veil will overpower the bride’s face.

3. Elaborate veils look best with plain wedding gowns. A strapless, matte satin wedding gown, a style that has been popular for the past 10 years, will look perfect with a custom designer wedding veil. The elaborate edging of the veil will fall over the bare arms and embellish the plain back of the wedding gown.

Wedding veils trends will continue to be bolder and more elaborate in years to come. But as wedding gowns move on from the minimalist styles of the past decade, less elaborate wedding veils, such as plain, pencil edge and satin cord edge veils are a smarter choice.

Hair and Headpieces for Informal Weddings

contributed by Michele Keffen

This is one of those difficult areas, as it would be nice if you looked like you on your wedding day. It would really be wonderful if everybody actually recognised you. But at the same time, there you are in the most beautiful of the beach wedding dresses you could find and your hair looks like it could not have bothered even getting out of bed that morning let alone actually made an effort.

I have always thought this where the middle of the road approach is the best…… Let me explain: If you always wear your hair up – wear half of it down. And of course, if you always wear your hair down – wear half of it up.

O.K., this might result in the same style for both scenarios, but it is a reliable and trusted method to get the ‘not trying too hard look’ and to a void the ‘couldn’t be bothered look’.

Put simply, the top and sides are pulled back from your face so that they will not look untidy for the photographs, and with the back down, it will not look like you are trying to look like somebody completely different. This, also, adds a bit of softening to the face which most women view as a good thing. For most beach, garden or informal weddings a softened hairstyle does seem to suit better than a very slick and server style.

Many beach brides do choose tiara style headpieces but I personally favour the less traditional headpieces for these weddings, as I believe it reflects the style of the wedding more. Somehow, I can’t help thinking when I see a bride on the beach with a tiara that there is some part of her that would rather be in a church having a traditional wedding.

There are so many alternative headpieces to choose from at the moment, both online and in shops. Remember to be practical about what you are choosing. Many brides travelling abroad for their wedding need to do their own hair on the morning. Therefore, you need to ask yourself whether you can you get it into your hair yourself or will you need help? Another thing to think about it is how fragile it is and is it flexible enough to withstand the journey?

Whatever you decide, make sure you are happy with the decision as you are going to be looking at those photographs for many years to come.

Jewelry Tips For the Bridal Party

contributed by Gabriel Stiller

It is very usual to find that would be brides have thought of everything to the last detail except the bridal jewelry for the bridal entourage. You may wonder why that is so important but can you imagine a bridal party that has perfectly co-coordinated shoes, dresses, hair and hats but mismatched jewelry!

For jewelry, the rule of the thumb is the less the better. Keep the ornaments simple but elegant. It goes without saying that the jewelry worn by the bridal party should not overpower the bride’s finery. All eyes should be on the bride and the bride party should form a well-coordinated but subtle backdrop. This is why the jewelry for the bridal entourage should be understated and simple.

The jewelry worn by the bridal party should keep to the main theme of the wedding. For instance, if your theme for the wedding revolves around the ocean, you may want the bridal jewelry to be made of pearls. The bride could wear the more elaborate pieces while the rest of the bridal party could wear thin, delicate strings of pearls etc. Similarly, if you are having a beach wedding, you could get your bridal party to wear shell jewelry or pretty floral jewelry.

Apart from necklaces the bridal jewelry could also include bracelets, brooches, tiaras and earrings. Whatever you choose, should match. So don’t try to mix and match and opt for pearl earrings to go with a blue stone necklace. The rule of the thumb here is that the earrings, necklace, bracelet and anything else that the bridal party may wear should all have the same accent. Mix and match ornaments destroy the theme and take away from what the bride is wearing.

The bridal jewelry need not always be made from precious metals or precious stones. You could use a variety of contemporary materials and designs that are available now to fit the jewelry into the wedding theme. Examples of such non-traditional jewelry are handcrafted designs, gothic or even tribal jewelry. You could also get a local jewelry designer who specializes in handcrafted jewelry to custom-design the bridal jewelry to match the theme of your wedding. This would not only make the jewelry as per your specifications but also be a great keepsake for all those on your bridal party. You can use any other innovative idea that you can think of to personalize the jewelry. Just keep in mind however that whatever bridal jewelry you select, it should not outshine the jewelry worn by the bride!

Bridal Accessories Which Will Make You Look Your Best on Your Big Day

contributed by Jhoana Cooper

So you’ve already chosen the perfect wedding dress that you have been dreaming of since you were a little girl.  What should be next on your agenda? After working long hours and going through endless fittings, the next thing that you need to take into consideration when planning your perfect wedding ensemble are your bridal accessories.  Would you go for a veil, a tiara or would you rather let your wedding dress speak for itself? When it comes to your jewelry bridal accessories, will you go for white diamonds or is a little bit of color fine for you? The task of deciding which wedding accessories and bridal accessories you will go for on your wedding day should be a fun one – so do it with your bridesmaids and have a fun time while you’re at it!

So how can you select which bridal accessories would look perfectly set against the whiteness of your wedding gown? Actually, selecting bridal accessories is a matter of personal preference. However, one of the major decisions that you need to make is whether or not a veil or a covering for your head should be part of your wedding accessories. Traditionally, veils or hats are an essential part of a bride’s wedding accessories – but today, it’s more a question of whether the covering for the head will suit your wedding dress or not. Again, the wedding accessories that you have on should suit your wedding dress and not the other way around.  For example, if you have a wedding gown which dips low in the back and you want this to be highlighted, do not go for a long veil which will cover the back of your gown. Instead, opt for a shorter one that will cover the front of your head.

Now, when it comes to the jewelry items which will be part of your wedding accessories – it’s all a matter of personal preference. You may want to wear a family heirloom which can be set against your wedding dress. Or, if you want an all-new jewelry set, shop around for pearl earnings and necklaces or a diamond necklace – the possibilities when it comes to your jewelry bridal accessories are practically endless. You may also want to opt for a tiara instead of a veil. If you do, you can choose one which is made of rhinestones, real diamonds or an elegant semi-precious stone.

The less-is-more fashion maxim will always work when you are in the process of choosing the wedding accessories that will work for you. Always try the accessories that you have chosen while you are wearing the dress – so that you can see whether they complement each other. For example, if you just cannot live without your long diamond earrings, keep the rest of your other wedding accessories to a minimum. Choose one piece which will serve as the highlight of your bridal ensemble – and stick to the basics when it comes to your other bridal accessories. Again, selecting the set of accessories that you will wear to complement your perfect wedding dress on your wedding day is one of the best parts of wedding planning, so have fun with it!
